Plus when your local PD says they can't pursue misdemeanor crimes like petty theft, car break ins, and non violent crimes in general it leaves a bad impression. So what's easier than a stationary target that advertises their personal information, location, and what crimes they plan on allegedly committing? Can't get any easier and they don't really have to worry about resistance.
Redevelopment might be a factor as well, since all of the new high rises around the massagey places are springing up and they don't exactly help sell apartments.

Most days in Bangkok I will spend about 5000 THB or so. If I'm drinking heavily it can be more, if I'm going after girls at the gogo bars or going to a soapy, it will be more. Other days, let's say, in Pattaya, I'm not doing much of anything at all and end up spending 3000 THB the entire day, for food, transportation, massage, and a freelancer. My friend who I have went with a few times was fine with 4000 THB in his pocket each day, including massages and horizontal entertainment.
Thailand is a great place since there are a lot of options for mongers at all budgets. I know people who have no issue staying in a decent hotel for $30 a night and getting the cheapest freelancers they can find, but I know that my personal preferences have me at about $300 a day, most of that is spent on hotel since I like staying in suites at nicer hotels.
I carry a copy of my passport (I have a card size print that I have laminated, when I get to the hotel I have them make a copy of the stamp from immigration) with me at all times, since I have been stopped before by the police for identification.
